Answers – Part V

Hindi films are all about relationships. Let’s explore some interesting fusions of on-screen/off-screen relationships that Amitabh has with other industrywallahs.

  1. Rishtey mein to hum tumhaare Sasur lagtey hain, par filmon mein kabhi kabhi..
    Amitabh and Aishwarya never reprised their real-life relationship (Sasur-Bahu) in films, closest they came was in Sarkar Raaj.Name the films where Amitabh and Aishwarya Rai/Bachchan relationship is:

    • Father:daughter – Mohabbatein (Amitabh’s comeback vehicle)
    • Brother:Sister – Hum Kisise Kam Nahin (newer one)
    • Uncle-niece (not blood relationship, apparently, but she does call him uncle in the movie and lives at his place) – Kyun Ho Gaya Na
  2. Purane Rishtey
    • Amitabh’s character in his first movie was named after his co-star in the same movie, who also happened to be younger brother of a more famous film personality. Name him. – Anwar Ali (Mehmood’s brother)

    • Some years later, the 2 brothers and Amitabh starred together in a movie – name the movie and the screen names/roles of the two brothers’ characters.  Bombay to Goa, Rajesh/Khanna, Driver/Conductor
    • Many years later, the younger brother was in a tough financial situation and Amitabh helped him out by agreeing to work in a film produced by him for a nominal amount – while the older brother charged full fees for the movie! Name the movie. – Khud-dar

  3. Amitabh has worked with many father-son duos (not in the same movie, as far as I know – share if instances come to your mind) in his career. Some are obvious, but let’s get to some non-obvious ones in the quiz. Name the movies where they have co-starred:
    • Father- despite being contemporaries, they acted together in one early movie (+ one uncredited special appearance by Amitabh) in 70’s till coming together for the Om Shanti Om song. – Jeetendra, Gehri Chaal
      Son – not a successful career (unlike his sister), but in one movie he acted with Amitabh in, his role was appreciated. – Tushar Kapoor, Khakee
    • Father – a famous comedian. Son – Very occasional actor with another main gig.
    • Father – Two memorable movies together (one action, one comedy). The asli jaat. Two Sons –First Son: Jaat da puttar. Only one (real, but forgettable) collaboration with this son, though Amitabh did special appearances in a couple of his movies. Second Son: Couple of collaborations – Dharmendra -Sholay, Sunny Deol – Insaniyat, Bobby Deol – Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon

  4. Staying with father-son collaborations and filmi khandaans, there are some second generation actors he has worked with, but never worked with the first generation, despite significant overlap in careers. Give 3 examples of such occurrences.

    Rakesh/Hrithik Roshan (Lakshya), Rajendra Kumar/Kumar Gaurav (Indrajeet), Feroze/Fardeen Khan (Dev), Raj/Rishi/Randhir Kapoor (many)

  5. There are some father-son collaborations which are not acting related and may be obscure for regular film-goers, but hopefully more relevant based on Amitabh’s own family background.
    • Father – an old-time director with Barsaat ki Raat (1960 version, not the Amitabh one) as his most famous work. While he never directed Amitabh, he did write dialogues for one of his early movies. – P.L. Santoshi/Saudagar
      Son – A more famous recent director, with a versatility to be admired. Has done at least a couple of movies with Amitabh. – Raj Kumar Santoshi, Khakee, Family
    • Father – A famous writer of Hindi films – his last film as screenplay writer starred Amitabh. – Inder Raj Anand (Shahenshaah)
      Son – A director/actor who collaborated with Amitabh in both capacities. He directed Hindi adaptation of “Meet John Doe”. – Tinnu Anand
    • Father – an FTII gold medalist and a classmate of Jaya. He acted with Amitabh thrice – roughly at 10-12 year intervals. He also produced one Amitabh blockbuster and directed a well-appreciated arty movie.- Romesh Sharma – remembered by most fans as Gonsalves from Hum – which he also produced. He was in Kala Paththar, Hum and Dil Jo Bhi Kahey with Amitabh. He also directed New Delhi Times – loosely based on Arun Shourie’s life till that point.
      Son – A one film non-wonder, produced/directed by Papa and Amitabh helped a friend out by acting in the movie. – Karan Sharma, Dil Jo Bhi Kahey

  6. Collaborations with Kapoor khandaan – while the Samadhi relationship was not meant to be (broken engagement of Karishma and Abhishek), Amitabh has acted frequently with the extended Kapoor khandaan. Major exceptions being the oldest two (Prithviraj and Raj and the youngest – Ranbir), while the most common collaborations would be with Shashi and Rishi. So, to get 3 points, name collaborations of 2 films of more with each of the 3 generations of the Kapoor family.
    Gen 1: Shammi – Zameer, Parvarish;
    Gen 2: Randhir – Pukar, Kasme Vaade;
    Gen 3: Kareena – Dev, K3G
